Summer Series {32} Sunny Slope Orchard

July 23, Saturday

We drove to Sunny Slope today. We buy peaches and strawberries in the summer, and fill up washed-out milk jugs with apple cider in the winter. When we pulled up, the horse and buggy were tied up on the side of the store. As the girls walked over to look at the horse, the Amish couple walked out. The man told us the horse’s name was Rocky and he was friendly. Lulu asked what breed he was and the man wasn’t sure, but said that his short ears meant that he had a little Morgan in him. I commiserated with the woman about the heat and how bad the nights had been. The Amish do not use electricity so I know she felt it every bit as much as me.

I bought a peach fry pie inside, which is a crescent-shaped mini pie coated with sugar like a glazed doughnut and stuffed with peaches. We bought homemade noodles for pot roast on Sunday and a box of peaches. The girls bought candies and little trinkets. I’m sure we’ll be back again before we leave; I’ve got to try another flavor of fry pie.
