Summer Series {11} New glasses

Friday, July 1

Remember when you got your new glasses as a child? How astonished you were at everything you had been missing? I remember standing on the sidewalk, buckled and cracked from tree roots muscling through underneath, my head thrown back, looking up at the trees in awe, turning slowly as I took in the kaleidoscope of images. I could see individual leaves, not just blobs of green.

Slate shingles, leaves of grass, the cat walking across the driveway: all sorts of things that were blurry and vague were now distinct. I got to enjoy it all over again when my daughter got her new glasses.

And if you never had glasses or braces or acne or unfortunate hair as a child, I don’t want to hear from you. Shouldn’t you be off dancing in a ballroom somewhere?
